Playa Painting- Langmuir Films
Wednesday, 20 February 2008
Wow! an entirely new direction! I'm completely caught up by organic systems. I've been absorbing the chaos of natural systems for a long time now and apparently the dam has burst! The days of my purely geometric designs are drawing to an end. When they occur now they will be incorporated into something more expansive...This design, in particular, is formed by a Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction , which is an example of non-linear thermodynamics, a principle feature in self-organizing structures, of which I am absolutely fascinated!

Playa Painting- Solstice Star
Thursday, 03 January 2008

This latest round has brought some big changes. My spot at Stinson is simply gone. All the sand has washed away leaving only pebbles. I love pebble beaches...and now I can't paint here for a while...

But I did make it into San Francisco and catch the tail end of light for a solstice offering.

Collaboration with Bill Kennedy
Thursday, 03 January 2008
This winter party season finally gave me the chance to collaborate with my friend Bill Kennedy, to combine our two art forms- his inflatables and my string art. The piece on the right is 14' across, the one on the left is 8' across. I look forward to more opportunities to work together again!

'Art Lost to the Tide'

"It's not every artist who puts all their effort into creating a grand design – only to watch it being washed away by the tide." The Metro UK (Sunday, November 18, 2007)

Cool! I made it into a daily magazine in London! Check out the rest of the story on The Metro site .

Playa Painting- Warning
Friday, 23 November 2007
Today's low tide came just an hour before sunset. Without an assistant I had to do a design that could be done alone  quickly. Given the fact that the day before I got splotches of oil on my feet, hands, and equipment, I decided to go with this danger symbol, to call attention to the ongoing state of our beaches. A man who had been camping at a choice location on the beach edge for several weeks was coincidentally packing up his gear and heading for higher ground. The reason: he had received an omen of major earthquake activity. He interpreted my danger design as alluding to this coming natural disaster. We'll see what transpires...

Playa Painting- Sun
Friday, 23 November 2007
Sunset on such a gorgeous day inspired me to modify the design I was going to do and added rays to make a stylized sun. In the midst of making this painting I discovered I was getting oil on my feet, hands, and equipment. Wow. I was caught by surprise- my day at the beach in SF wasn't this bad at all. There's still lots of oil on our beaches...
